Drawings for Apicality
The invitation to publish Apicality with Nion Editions included the option to create a unique handmade insert for each copy of the book. The drawings that resulted (126 in all), made by the author in the fall of 2023, derive from an interest in the hard-nosed and sometimes comical specificity of botanical and scientific diagrams, figures, and illustrations. All but three of the drawings are after figures by the seventeenth-century Italian biologist and physician Marcello Malpighi, whose works can be consulted online at HathiTrust Digital Library. The remaining three are derived from figures in E. J. H. Corner, The Life of Plants (London, 1964).
